Instructional Strategies & Environment

  • Priority Standards Focus: Every lesson should have a clearly defined Missouri Priority Standard objective that guides the activity and assessment.
  • Total Participation Techniques: Instruction must move beyond traditional "sit and get" methods. Teachers are expected to plan Kagan engagement structures per instructional block to ensure equity of voice.
  • Hands-On Enrichment: Afternoon blocks are dedicated to applying grade level standards (in any content area) through project-based learning, hands-on experiments, inquiry or exploration.

Literacy:

  • Standards Focus: Instruction must prioritize Missouri Learning Standards (MLS) for Reading and Writing, focusing on foundational phonics, fluency, and deep comprehension.
  • Active Engagement: Use Kagan structures (such as Number Heads Together or Quiz-Quiz-Trade) to ensure every student is actively participating in vocabulary and content discussions.
  • Thematic Vocabulary: Teachers should use Missouri learning standards modules (for the grade level they are teaching) to build robust background knowledge and academic language across disciplines.

Mathematics: Upside Down Teaching

  • Discovery-First: Following the Upside Down Math model, lessons should begin with a "challenge" or complex problem that requires students to apply critical thinking before receiving direct instruction.
  • Hands-On Manipulatives: Mathematical concepts must be explored through physical objects and tactile experiences to bridge the gap between concrete and abstract understanding.
  • Collaborative Problem-Solving: Students should work in pairs or small teams using Kagan activities to explain their mathematical reasoning and justify their solutions to peers.
